Rope Night
<p>A fun night was had at our last meeting in April. We were treated to three separate items, starting off with a chance to see the audition routine that Mark Waddington was going to present to The Magic Circle. His routine was included a dazzling display of card magic, sponge rabbits and comedy, all mixed into one. <p>Another month has come around and here we are with another issue of the Billet. It’s only been three weeks since our last meeting as the April meeting was held a week later to accommodate the Easter holidays. Haven’t we had an amazing few weeks weather-wise? <p>There was certainly a strong BMC presence at the Northern Magic Circle’s Spring Parade convention. Several members enjoyed the weekend or part of if they were only there for the Sunday. It was a shame that Alan and Betty Driffield weren’t there as they’d have enjoyed the events that took place. While we didn’t bring home the clutch of trophies we used to - we dominated over other affiliated societies for several years - there was certainly a huge amount of input from many of our membership. Librarians Ramblings
<p>Put Princess Diana on the front of a magazine and it is said that you will triple the sales. The same could almost be said about Tommy Cooper. The man needs no introduction and always generates laughter at the very mention of his name. We all have our favourite quips and quote and we can all make a stab at his famous line –“just like that….. not like that…….like that!” in a poor imitation of his deep voice. Keith Pickles 60th Birthday Party
<p>Saturday 25th March was the venue of “Wilsden’s got talent” or was it Keith’s 60th? Anyway there was quite a lot there, both magicians and Keith’s friends and family. </p> <p> After the buffet, was the entertainment. No expense was spared to get a top line up. Or, knowing Keith, no money was ‘spared with’ to get entertainment. <p>Hope you enjoyed the Party Night.</p> <p> I thought it was a lot of fun and particular thanks must go to Keith for arranging most of the puzzles on the evening. I was responsible for the Charades game. It seemed to be well received. I used to enjoy watching ‘Give us a Clue’ on ITV many years back; my favourite celeb being Roy Kinnear. I introduced it to the Easter Parade Convention last year as the Late Show offering. The Convention Crasher - Justin Lee Collins
<p>Not really liking Justin Lee Collins when I have seen him before as I felt he was poking fun at the object of his programme, I started to watch the programme with some trepidation. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with him and the show. </p> <p> The basis of the show was that Justin Lee Collins wanted to perform in a magic competition in Ohio, America. St James The Great Church, Pudsey Show
<p>I'm no great magician but being a theatre lover I do know what makes a good show. And the annual show in Pudsey didn't disappoint. </p> <p> Compere for the day was the ever-reliable and always funny Stevie B. With an audience made up of children and adults, he had a bit of a balancing act on his hands, but he managed it with ease and put the crowd in the right frame of mind. <p>Firstly, thank you to all those who supported the recent Roadshow at Pudsey. This means all the performers, assistants, reporter and those who joined the audience. It was a tremendously well received show and made the local paper, there be a copy of that in the Billet. This of course is the last Billet to be produced by Keith and sincerest thanks must go to Keith and Pam for such a tremendous personal commitment. </p><p>Tonight of course is the AGM at we’ll learn as to whether the magazine will be carried on or not. <p>I am writing this report on a sun-lounger on the deck of the Sea Princess somewhere in the Caribbean. Its 10 30am with blue skies and a temperature of 90 degrees. To keep cool I have just had a glass of ice and water followed by ice and orange. Saturday we will be in Jamaica and home on Sunday. Party Night
<p>23 members turned up on a wet Friday night in January for the Bradford Magic Circle’s Party Night. </p> <p> Keith & Steve Gore had brought along a few party games. <p>When I took over this role at the AGM in February 1988 I never thought that I would still be doing it 20 years later. The previous magazine had gone under the name The Mirage, and was edited by James Heginbotham; who took it on in 1987 after Paul Hallas had carried out the task for one year. However, I believe that James could not find the time to prepare a magazine each month, and Lorna took it on. Unfortunately the magazine only appeared spasmodically. There was a 6 page issue in February 1988 (of which I wrote 3 pages). <p>Well here we are again at the end of another Magic Circle year. Doesn’t time fly, you look around and it’s the sixtieth anniversary of the club already. The trouble is the Circle was formed in 1948, the same year I was born so that makes me 60 this year as well. Doesn’t time fly. Bradford Magic Circle Party Night
<p>This was my first experience of a BMC party night, and having been asked by Paul to step into his ‘Assistant (To?) The Editor’ shoes and write a report, I duly turned up with my notebook and pen in hand, not really knowing what to expect. Part of being involved with magicians (as all you long suffering partners know) is that things are not always as they seem and you can never be sure quite what they’re going to do next. <p>A year or two ago, Mark Waddington was fortunate to see Ian Keable present an evening of mentalism in Grassington village hall. This was one of several small venues where Ian was presenting a one-man show. At a recent meeting at Harrogate Society of Magicians, Rex Stott mentioned that Martyn James was also intending presenting variety shows around the country at village halls and that one of these would in the village of Linton, near Wetherby. It was unfortunate that it was on the Tuesday of the week when Britain (and especially the soft southerners) had the adverse weather. <p>So there has been a slight shuffle in the committee and officers following the AGM. First of all, a huge thank you to Colin Gough who at the end of his three years as ex-officio has now stepped off from committee. So too has Ken Mitchell, again with our thanks. Mark Waddington has remained on committee, having been co-opted on last year, and has taken on the role of Publicity Officer. <p>Welcome to the latest issue of The Billet. It was good to see so many people at our last meeting. The lecture was one on the amazing art of Quick Change and was given by one of the leading performers in the field, Lee Alex. The meeting was the first of what I will hope will be many ‘shared’ meetings with other magical societies and I thought it was a very successful evening, especially as the subject matter isn’t the most commonly performed of the magic arts. <p>Writer’s block is a terrible thing. You sit there in front of the typewriter or word processor with the blank paper or screen staring back at you. You keep thinking of ideas but then reject them after writing just a few lines. You search the Internet for stories or facts but nothing seems to jump out at you. </p> <p> Well that’s how I am right now. Clayton Village Hall Roadshow
<p><strong>Saturday 14th February 2009 </strong> </p> <p> After a year gap, the Bradford Magic Circle returned to Clayton for a Road Show. I arrived with Steve Hord to be met by Colin Gough, who told us there were only a couple of people inside…and this was 15 mins before the allotted start!
