Magickal Baths! Bath that bring healing
By Sam Stevens, Thu Dec 8th

Magicakal Baths! Baths that bring healing. For the most part, I think that can be a valuable way to"act" out your anger, resentment, bitterness or jealousy. Thevery act of doing a spell can make a person who feels powerlessor victimized, feel at least briefly, for at time that they aresomehow in control of the situation again. I have found thefollowing "freezer" to be quite satisfying to do, if youfind yourself somehow dumped, oppressed or just plain wishingfor some kind of psychological torture to stop. I am notcompletely sure if these or not, but when someone does mewrong, the first thing that pops into mind is the frosty insidesof my refrigerator. I love these because they fall underthe category of corny spells, trailer trash wiccanary andbecause they originate from such an emotional, passionate andold style of witchcraft. Yet at the same time they are verymodern because they make use of the fridge. Magicakal Baths! Baths that bring healing. Technically too, they fall under the category of black magic because they arerevenge spells, and represent the desire to control anotherperson. Being somewhat of a collector and connoisseur of cornyspells, trailer trash wiccanary and any ritual that allows youto "act out your feelings" without necessarily hurting anyone, Ithought I'd share them with you because they are a few of myfavourites. Some of them have been sourced from Lexa Rosean, author of the Supermarket Sorceress who is a master of KitchenWitchery. Still I think the important thing about a freezerspell is to start with the basics and then make it your own. Iknow one natural witch, (a famous Canadian singer in fact) whoknows nothing about freezer spells, yet every time she gets madat someone, she writes their name on a little piece of paper, twists it up and throws it in the freezer to "make it stop!" Idiscovered this one day when I was groping through her freezerfor some ice cream and a flutter of little pieces of paper fellout to the floor. Magicakal Baths! Baths that bring healing. When I asked her about it, she told me herintuition had told her to put the people "on ice." The essenceof a freezer spell is about time. The idea is to stop somethingin its tracks. Freezer also fall into the category ofbinding spells, as often their purpose is to paralyse anoffender. They are used for protection, but mainly for REVENGE!Here are a few of my favourites. THE BASIC ICE CUBE TRAY SPELL:This is all-purpose and what I like about it is that you can usemagickal ingredients to sweeten or sour the mix before you chuckit in the freezer. Basically, you take twelve small pieces ofpaper and write down the names twelve people or situations whohave not been very nice to you or who have irked you or done youwrong. Think of twelve people who have been hostile to you, orwho have a bad attitude towards you or who have behaved asobstacles

to what you want in your life or career. Now stickthese twelve pieces of paper in the ice cube tray compartmentsand add a little sugar, or honey to sweeten up their attitudetowards you. You could also add a few other things as well ifyou wanted - a little dill or parsley powder for improvedcommunication, orange water for joy or rose water to increaseloving vibrations. Then you fill the rest of the tray with waterand stick in the freezer. I like this spell because it isrelatively innocent and is persuading others to think of youkindly and not to harm you. A more vengeful version of thisspell would be to add substances like vinegar (to sour theirexperiences) cigarette ashes (to cause depression) orhorseradish (to cause arguments.) If your resentment is directedtowards a particular individual, perhaps a male who has dumpedyou for some one else you might consider doing this IMPOTENCEspell. While shopping for the cucumber at your local vegetablestore, try and find one that resembles your ex-partner's actualmember when it is erect. At the very least this will get yougiggling. Then carve his name and his birth-date into the fleshof the cucumber and throw it into the freezer. It will start togo soft and wither after a few weeks, and while this happens, imagine him and the sweet young thing that he betrayed youhaving conversations like "I swear this has never happened to mebefore." "It's ok. I understand." Magicakal Baths! Baths that bring healing.

The ultimate freezer spell however, in terms of sheer nastiness,is this BREAK THEM UP freezer spell in which you write theoffending couple's names on a piece of paper (if you don't knowthe name of the person coming between you write "unknown rival")You put the pieces of paper in a Tupperware container along witha piece of rotten fish, fill it with water and freeze it. Fishare symbols of fertility and happiness, so the ultimate purposeof this ritual is to have the two lovers become turned off fromeach other. One person, who tried this spell, told me shelaughed her head off, when her boyfriend came back to her andcomplained that his new lover had terrible B.O. I haven't triedthis one myself, but she says it worked. Lexa Rosean also boastssuccess with this one. I can't guarantee these work, butif you are too chicken to enact some real revenge (like turn theperson into the I.R.S.) these little rituals at least satisfy adesire for "petty revenge". Magicakal Baths! Baths that bring healing.

I’ve mentioned the celebrations at Huddersfield a few times. It was certainly worth going across for the celebratory show on the 27th June. I’d have planned to go to the events during the day as well but it was Northern Magic Circle’s Junior Day as well and I wanted to support both.

Plans went to pot when Louise realised that she needed the car the same day for work, a new Booths store has opened up in Ripon and she was there to support the new staff at that store and to provide customer relations. Anyway, I was stuck.

... More Reading...

Wasn’t Pavel good? I certainly enjoyed it. Some great ideas, with lots of colour and variety. I know he was well received elsewhere from what I’ve been told. I’m hoping to have some answers from Pavel to the same questions which I asked Shawn Farquhar. Shawn’s emailed me back with his answers. I hope you find them of interest.

What was the first magic trick that you saw performed?

The magic act of Robert Dorian.
I’m sure I’m not alone in this, being a magician’s wife presents some unusual occurrences. Most of these are when I’m out with Stevie. One however was when he was on his way home from work so nowhere near to lend assistance.

It was in November 2008 one tea-time. There was a knock on the door, and on the doorstep stood a wizened old man.

“Does Stephen Bellerby live here?” he asked.

“Yes he does,” I replied, “but he’s at work. Huddersfield Celebrates 60 Years of Magic

A report of the afternoons free activities at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield by the Huddersfield Circle of Magicians

In 1949 a group of local individuals met for the first time, they all had one thing in common, ‘a passion for magic’ and so the Huddersfield Circle of Magicians was formed.

60 years on and the society is still going strong, they meet around 20 times a year mostly at their head quarters tucked away in the Latvian Club, but also at Orlandos Restaurant, Grange Moor. Whilst they may not be the largest... More Reading...
Editorial

Well firstly I have to say how pleased I am with the response to my ‘rant’ in my editorial last month. Although I am still desperate for new material, people have at last been forthcoming with items for the Billet. Please, please, let it continue. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a huge article, it can be a joke or a story, a memory from the old days or even something you might have come across while browsing on the internet! There is always the letters page too, so if there are any comments, good or bad, about anything you like, please send me a letter. So... More Reading...
Librarian’s Ramblings

Well tonight is the night. Perhaps none of you have noticed but tonight the Librarian Entertains. I hope you enjoy what we have got lined up for you and that it will bring the magic contained in the many books that the Circle holds to life. We want to lift it off the page and show how it can be entertaining and fun.

Basically the idea will be that we will divide the members attending into about three or four groups. Each group will be given some library books containing tricks, jokes etc. and a couple of packs of playing cards, ropes, coins and dice. The object is to... More Reading...

Hello Wizards,

We’ve certainly done well for May, haven’t we? We had a great start to the month with Steve Naylor’s wonderful lecture on table-hopping and the business involved therein. I suppose members could be forgiven for their naivety, if they felt the meeting wouldn’t be up to much as such as he’s “just one of our members”. Those of us, who have known Steve a number of years, certainly knew the breadth of his knowledge in conjuring. The only downside of his lecture, and one that was inevitable,... More Reading...
Magnificent Lectures

Well we were treated to two excellent lectures during May. The first of these was by our own Steve Naylor and it was a lecture not to be missed. It was entitled ‘Table Hopping With Both Feet On The Ground’ and had first been given to the Northern Magic Circle’s Spring Parade convention in April. Steve’s delivery of the lecture was as professional as any lecture I have seen and was full of invaluable advice for those interested in table hopping. Steve’s many years of experience in this business shone through and there was something for... More Reading...

I think it was Geoffrey Durham who said at his lecture that he was told never to join an amateur magic club or circle as they will tell you to do it all wrong!!

This maybe true of some magic circles but here at Bradford we are fortunate in having some very knowledgeable and experienced members. You will no doubt have read elsewhere in this issue about the lecture that Steve Naylor gave at the May meeting call Table Hopping (with both feet on the ground). Personally I thought it was one of the best lectures that we have ever had, and that includes lectures from world... More Reading...

Ok, straight into the Editorial this month with a rant. Despite many repeated requests for articles and contributions to the Billet, nothing has been forthcoming. Let me ask you this, do you want a society magazine? Do you want information on what’s happening in the magic world, ideas for new tricks and effects, competitions and fun stuff? If not, I’m quite happy to give the 20 hours or so of my own time that it takes me to produce the Billet every month back to my wife and kids - I’m sure they’d appreciate it. If you don’t bother, why... More Reading...
Rope Night

A fun night was had at our last meeting in April. We were treated to three separate items, starting off with a chance to see the audition routine that Mark Waddington was going to present to The Magic Circle. His routine was included a dazzling display of card magic, sponge rabbits and comedy, all mixed into one. It was a great routine, superbly executed, and we wish Mark all the best on his foray into the world of the prestigious Magic Circle.

Next up was the main item of the evening, with our very own Colin ‘Rope Man’ Gough giving a workshop on... More Reading...

Another month has come around and here we are with another issue of the Billet. It’s only been three weeks since our last meeting as the April meeting was held a week later to accommodate the Easter holidays. Haven’t we had an amazing few weeks weather-wise? I’ve been lucky enough to have had two weeks holiday over the Easter period and I couldn’t have asked for better weather. Sitting here today though, typing this, we seem to have reverted back to the usual dull, wet, chilly days we’ve come to know and love...

Ok,... More Reading...

There was certainly a strong BMC presence at the Northern Magic Circle’s Spring Parade convention. Several members enjoyed the weekend or part of if they were only there for the Sunday. It was a shame that Alan and Betty Driffield weren’t there as they’d have enjoyed the events that took place. While we didn’t bring home the clutch of trophies we used to - we dominated over other affiliated societies for several years - there was certainly a huge amount of input from many of our membership. As well as my being involved quite deeply, also involved... More Reading...

Put Princess Diana on the front of a magazine and it is said that you will triple the sales. The same could almost be said about Tommy Cooper. The man needs no introduction and always generates laughter at the very mention of his name. We all have our favourite quips and quote and we can all make a stab at his famous line –“just like that….. not like that…….like that!” in a poor imitation of his deep voice. It’s almost unbelievable that he died 25 years ago, 15th April 1984.

But just how good a... More Reading...
Keith Pickles 60th Birthday Party

Saturday 25th March was the venue of “Wilsden’s got talent” or was it Keith’s 60th? Anyway there was quite a lot there, both magicians and Keith’s friends and family.

After the buffet, was the entertainment. No expense was spared to get a top line up. Or, knowing Keith, no money was ‘spared with’ to get entertainment. Stevie B was the compere and opened with a trick involving counting 6 cards in a repetitive manner, bet you can’t guess what it was!

Next on was me.
Hope you enjoyed the Party Night.

I thought it was a lot of fun and particular thanks must go to Keith for arranging most of the puzzles on the evening. I was responsible for the Charades game. It seemed to be well received. I used to enjoy watching ‘Give us a Clue’ on ITV many years back; my favourite celeb being Roy Kinnear. I introduced it to the Easter Parade Convention last year as the Late Show offering. The Convention Crasher - Justin Lee Collins

Not really liking Justin Lee Collins when I have seen him before as I felt he was poking fun at the object of his programme, I started to watch the programme with some trepidation. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with him and the show.

The basis of the show was that Justin Lee Collins wanted to perform in a magic competition in Ohio, America. He wanted to perform Metamorphosis (or as it is probably better known, The Sub Trunk Illusion). We were shown The Pendragons performing this at the lightning speed they did it. There was also old film of... More Reading...
St James The Great Church, Pudsey Show

I'm no great magician but being a theatre lover I do know what makes a good show. And the annual show in Pudsey didn't disappoint.

Compere for the day was the ever-reliable and always funny Stevie B. With an audience made up of children and adults, he had a bit of a balancing act on his hands, but he managed it with ease and put the crowd in the right frame of mind. With the children excited, the acts began. The first half was primarily for the youngsters.
Firstly, thank you to all those who supported the recent Roadshow at Pudsey. This means all the performers, assistants, reporter and those who joined the audience. It was a tremendously well received show and made the local paper, there be a copy of that in the Billet. This of course is the last Billet to be produced by Keith and sincerest thanks must go to Keith and Pam for such a tremendous personal commitment.

Tonight of course is the AGM at we’ll learn as to whether the magazine will be carried on or not.
I am writing this report on a sun-lounger on the deck of the Sea Princess somewhere in the Caribbean. Its 10 30am with blue skies and a temperature of 90 degrees. To keep cool I have just had a glass of ice and water followed by ice and orange. Saturday we will be in Jamaica and home on Sunday. I hope this article reaches Keith before the Billet deadline.

On board ship we had entertainment every night, four of which were occupied by magicians.
