Huddersfield Celebrates 60 Years of Magic

<p>Well firstly I have to say how pleased I am with the response to my ‘rant’ in my editorial last month. Although I am still desperate for new material, people have at last been forthcoming with items for the Billet. Please, please, let it continue. Librarian’s Ramblings
<p>Well tonight is the night. Perhaps none of you have noticed but tonight the Librarian Entertains. I hope you enjoy what we have got lined up for you and that it will bring the magic contained in the many books that the Circle holds to life. Magnificent Lectures
<p> Well we were treated to two excellent lectures during May. The first of these was by our own Steve Naylor and it was a lecture not to be missed. It was entitled ‘Table Hopping With Both Feet On The Ground’ and had first been given to the Northern Magic Circle’s Spring Parade convention in April. Steve’s delivery of the lecture was as professional as any lecture I have seen and was full of invaluable advice for those interested in table hopping. <p> I think it was Geoffrey Durham who said at his lecture that he was told never to join an amateur magic club or circle as they will tell you to do it all wrong!!</p> <p> This maybe true of some magic circles but here at Bradford we are fortunate in having some very knowledgeable and experienced members. <p>Ok, straight into the Editorial this month with a rant. Despite many repeated requests for articles and contributions to the Billet, nothing has been forthcoming. Let me ask you this, do you want a society magazine? Do you want information on what’s happening in the magic world, ideas for new tricks and effects, competitions and fun stuff? If not, I’m quite happy to give the 20 hours or so of my own time that it takes me to produce the Billet every month back to my wife and kids - I’m sure they’d appreciate it. Rope Night
<p>A fun night was had at our last meeting in April. We were treated to three separate items, starting off with a chance to see the audition routine that Mark Waddington was going to present to The Magic Circle. His routine was included a dazzling display of card magic, sponge rabbits and comedy, all mixed into one. <p>Another month has come around and here we are with another issue of the Billet. It’s only been three weeks since our last meeting as the April meeting was held a week later to accommodate the Easter holidays. Haven’t we had an amazing few weeks weather-wise? <p>There was certainly a strong BMC presence at the Northern Magic Circle’s Spring Parade convention. Several members enjoyed the weekend or part of if they were only there for the Sunday. It was a shame that Alan and Betty Driffield weren’t there as they’d have enjoyed the events that took place. While we didn’t bring home the clutch of trophies we used to - we dominated over other affiliated societies for several years - there was certainly a huge amount of input from many of our membership. <p>Put Princess Diana on the front of a magazine and it is said that you will triple the sales. The same could almost be said about Tommy Cooper. The man needs no introduction and always generates laughter at the very mention of his name. We all have our favourite quips and quote and we can all make a stab at his famous line –“just like that….. not like that…….like that!” in a poor imitation of his deep voice. Keith Pickles 60th Birthday Party
<p>Saturday 25th March was the venue of “Wilsden’s got talent” or was it Keith’s 60th? Anyway there was quite a lot there, both magicians and Keith’s friends and family. </p> <p> After the buffet, was the entertainment. No expense was spared to get a top line up. Or, knowing Keith, no money was ‘spared with’ to get entertainment. <p>Hope you enjoyed the Party Night.</p> <p> I thought it was a lot of fun and particular thanks must go to Keith for arranging most of the puzzles on the evening. I was responsible for the Charades game. It seemed to be well received. I used to enjoy watching ‘Give us a Clue’ on ITV many years back; my favourite celeb being Roy Kinnear. I introduced it to the Easter Parade Convention last year as the Late Show offering. The Convention Crasher - Justin Lee Collins
<p>Not really liking Justin Lee Collins when I have seen him before as I felt he was poking fun at the object of his programme, I started to watch the programme with some trepidation. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with him and the show. </p> <p> The basis of the show was that Justin Lee Collins wanted to perform in a magic competition in Ohio, America. St James The Great Church, Pudsey Show
<p>I'm no great magician but being a theatre lover I do know what makes a good show. And the annual show in Pudsey didn't disappoint. </p> <p> Compere for the day was the ever-reliable and always funny Stevie B. With an audience made up of children and adults, he had a bit of a balancing act on his hands, but he managed it with ease and put the crowd in the right frame of mind. <p>Firstly, thank you to all those who supported the recent Roadshow at Pudsey. This means all the performers, assistants, reporter and those who joined the audience. It was a tremendously well received show and made the local paper, there be a copy of that in the Billet. This of course is the last Billet to be produced by Keith and sincerest thanks must go to Keith and Pam for such a tremendous personal commitment. </p><p>Tonight of course is the AGM at we’ll learn as to whether the magazine will be carried on or not. <p>I am writing this report on a sun-lounger on the deck of the Sea Princess somewhere in the Caribbean. Its 10 30am with blue skies and a temperature of 90 degrees. To keep cool I have just had a glass of ice and water followed by ice and orange. Saturday we will be in Jamaica and home on Sunday.
