Mystical Mind? And The Truth About Magic Spells By Katerina Guarente, Fri Dec 9th
Mystical mind and the truth about spells over matterCivilizations all over the world have always relied on theirfaith in spiritual or mystical powers to accomplish trulyamazing feats. Long before modern medicine came on the scene, most health concerns were traditionally handled by applying adose of spirituality, voodoo, witchcraft, astrology, or psychicpower from any number of paranormal sources. Hundreds of yearsago, one simply couldn't get through the day without help fromthe "unseen" world. Of course, that was in the "dark ages"before we were enlightened by the miracles of modern science. But is it wise for people today to scoff at all that seemed towork for so many people, for so long? Mystical mind and the truth about spells
In a world where mainstream religion is often mocked, it's easyto laugh at those believe in the powers of the paranormal, occult, magic, psychic or new age remedies. We often label themas misguided kooks or blind followers of today's trendyHollywood scene and counter-culture. But as humans, it is builtinto our composition to search for truth, and solutions to themany problems we face. And let's face it, today's world isfilled with day-to-day problems that we strive to overcome...issues dealing with love, money, health, just to name a few.Life is a difficult struggle for millions of people worldwidewho seek relief, and solutions to their problems by turning tomagic spells. Just go to Ebay and do search on love ormagic spells. You'll find an endless potpourri of psychics andspell casters who can make your problems disappear, or bring youamazing results for just a few dollars. Think that's funny? Itgets better. When asked, most people who buy these willtell you that they really work... and they do.
So how can a love spell performed by a psychic actually attracta soulmate to a lonely person seeking a love partner? Did thatmoney spell really make that struggling secretary get a jobpromotion and a salary raise? And what about that healing spellthat cured my neighbor's back pain? The unbelievers will likelypoint to coincidence, some sort of logical explanation, orattribute the results to simply "mind over matter." But thosewho believe in psychic powers and the paranormal world thinkotherwise - there must be a spiritual or metaphysical helpinghand involved.
As a self-professed psychic and paranormal expert, who hasstudied spirituality, psychic phenomena, and the art of spellcasting, I personally believe that there is much more to thisthan meets the eye. Most mainstream religions accept the powerof prayer as a way to receive blessings, protection and goodnessfrom spiritual sources.
Even medical professionals are nowrecognizing that an individual's faith and beliefs can play amajor role in improving quality of life and health. However, while many doctors will admit that there is some benefit toholistic and alternative medicines, you'll be pressed to findany who will publicly encourage seeking answers from a psychicor magic spell.
There has always been a stigma in going to a fortune teller, psychic or spell caster, which keeps people from easilyaccepting their virtues. As an industry, the psychic businesshas brought on much of this skepticism itself. Shoddy late nighttelevision infomercials for psychic readings, con artists orcarnival fortune tellers are the images that come to mind formany, when they think of psychics. Just look at how astrologyand other psychic-related ads have that tiny disclaimer at thebottom that says "for entertainment purposes only." It's aboutas phony as pro wrestling, right? Well, don't be too quick toagree.
There are more people than you think who use money or lovespells on a regular basis, in an attempt to restore a badrelationship, or gain financial freedom. And these are folksfrom all walks or life, professions, income levels, religiousaffiliations and nationalities. Sure, some may rely too much onseeking guidance and help from the psychic world, but most ofthem are die-hard believers of the occult and would not have itany other way. They will tell you that these work forthem, their lives have been enriched, and you are the foolishone who doesn't know what you're missing.
People always ask me, "Are these real? I mean, can theyactually make things happen that I can't do on my own?" Ifspells can do what they claim they can do (improve love life, attract more money, better luck at gambling) then the answer hasto be "Yes." A spell that does what it is supposed to do has gotto be real. Of course, it helps if you have a positive outlook, and believe that the spell can truly help you. But if the spelldelivers results, then it has to be real. Believers will tellyou that those who refuse to open their minds to thepossibilities of magic and spiritual solutions will neverknow what they are missing. Perhaps it is the unbelievers whoare experiencing "mind over matter," only their mindset isnarrowly fixed on the opposite end of the belief scale.
Why limit your world to just the few things you can see andtouch? After all, what you see isn't always what you get.

I’ve mentioned the celebrations at Huddersfield a few times. It was certainly worth going across for the celebratory show on the 27th June. I’d have planned to go to the events during the day as well but it was Northern Magic Circle’s Junior Day as well and I wanted to support both.

Plans went to pot when Louise realised that she needed the car the same day for work, a new Booths store has opened up in Ripon and she was there to support the new staff at that store and to provide customer relations. Anyway, I was stuck.

... More Reading...

Wasn’t Pavel good? I certainly enjoyed it. Some great ideas, with lots of colour and variety. I know he was well received elsewhere from what I’ve been told. I’m hoping to have some answers from Pavel to the same questions which I asked Shawn Farquhar. Shawn’s emailed me back with his answers. I hope you find them of interest.

What was the first magic trick that you saw performed?

The magic act of Robert Dorian.
I’m sure I’m not alone in this, being a magician’s wife presents some unusual occurrences. Most of these are when I’m out with Stevie. One however was when he was on his way home from work so nowhere near to lend assistance.

It was in November 2008 one tea-time. There was a knock on the door, and on the doorstep stood a wizened old man.

“Does Stephen Bellerby live here?” he asked.

“Yes he does,” I replied, “but he’s at work. Huddersfield Celebrates 60 Years of Magic

A report of the afternoons free activities at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield by the Huddersfield Circle of Magicians

In 1949 a group of local individuals met for the first time, they all had one thing in common, ‘a passion for magic’ and so the Huddersfield Circle of Magicians was formed.

60 years on and the society is still going strong, they meet around 20 times a year mostly at their head quarters tucked away in the Latvian Club, but also at Orlandos Restaurant, Grange Moor. Whilst they may not be the largest... More Reading...

Well firstly I have to say how pleased I am with the response to my ‘rant’ in my editorial last month. Although I am still desperate for new material, people have at last been forthcoming with items for the Billet. Please, please, let it continue. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a huge article, it can be a joke or a story, a memory from the old days or even something you might have come across while browsing on the internet! There is always the letters page too, so if there are any comments, good or bad, about anything you like, please send me a letter. Librarian’s Ramblings

Well tonight is the night. Perhaps none of you have noticed but tonight the Librarian Entertains. I hope you enjoy what we have got lined up for you and that it will bring the magic contained in the many books that the Circle holds to life. We want to lift it off the page and show how it can be entertaining and fun.

Basically the idea will be that we will divide the members attending into about three or four groups. Each group will be given some library books containing tricks, jokes etc. and a couple of packs of playing cards, ropes, coins and dice. The object is to... More Reading...

Hello Wizards,

We’ve certainly done well for May, haven’t we? We had a great start to the month with Steve Naylor’s wonderful lecture on table-hopping and the business involved therein. I suppose members could be forgiven for their naivety, if they felt the meeting wouldn’t be up to much as such as he’s “just one of our members”. Those of us, who have known Steve a number of years, certainly knew the breadth of his knowledge in conjuring. The only downside of his lecture, and one that was inevitable,... More Reading...
Magnificent Lectures

Well we were treated to two excellent lectures during May. The first of these was by our own Steve Naylor and it was a lecture not to be missed. It was entitled ‘Table Hopping With Both Feet On The Ground’ and had first been given to the Northern Magic Circle’s Spring Parade convention in April. Steve’s delivery of the lecture was as professional as any lecture I have seen and was full of invaluable advice for those interested in table hopping. Steve’s many years of experience in this business shone through and there was something for... More Reading...

I think it was Geoffrey Durham who said at his lecture that he was told never to join an amateur magic club or circle as they will tell you to do it all wrong!!

This maybe true of some magic circles but here at Bradford we are fortunate in having some very knowledgeable and experienced members. You will no doubt have read elsewhere in this issue about the lecture that Steve Naylor gave at the May meeting call Table Hopping (with both feet on the ground). Personally I thought it was one of the best lectures that we have ever had, and that includes lectures from world... More Reading...

Ok, straight into the Editorial this month with a rant. Despite many repeated requests for articles and contributions to the Billet, nothing has been forthcoming. Let me ask you this, do you want a society magazine? Do you want information on what’s happening in the magic world, ideas for new tricks and effects, competitions and fun stuff? If not, I’m quite happy to give the 20 hours or so of my own time that it takes me to produce the Billet every month back to my wife and kids - I’m sure they’d appreciate it. If you don’t bother, why... More Reading...
Rope Night

A fun night was had at our last meeting in April. We were treated to three separate items, starting off with a chance to see the audition routine that Mark Waddington was going to present to The Magic Circle. His routine was included a dazzling display of card magic, sponge rabbits and comedy, all mixed into one. It was a great routine, superbly executed, and we wish Mark all the best on his foray into the world of the prestigious Magic Circle.

Next up was the main item of the evening, with our very own Colin ‘Rope Man’ Gough giving a workshop on... More Reading...

Another month has come around and here we are with another issue of the Billet. It’s only been three weeks since our last meeting as the April meeting was held a week later to accommodate the Easter holidays. Haven’t we had an amazing few weeks weather-wise? I’ve been lucky enough to have had two weeks holiday over the Easter period and I couldn’t have asked for better weather. Sitting here today though, typing this, we seem to have reverted back to the usual dull, wet, chilly days we’ve come to know and love...

Ok,... More Reading...

There was certainly a strong BMC presence at the Northern Magic Circle’s Spring Parade convention. Several members enjoyed the weekend or part of if they were only there for the Sunday. It was a shame that Alan and Betty Driffield weren’t there as they’d have enjoyed the events that took place. While we didn’t bring home the clutch of trophies we used to - we dominated over other affiliated societies for several years - there was certainly a huge amount of input from many of our membership. As well as my being involved quite deeply, also involved... More Reading...

Put Princess Diana on the front of a magazine and it is said that you will triple the sales. The same could almost be said about Tommy Cooper. The man needs no introduction and always generates laughter at the very mention of his name. We all have our favourite quips and quote and we can all make a stab at his famous line –“just like that….. not like that…….like that!” in a poor imitation of his deep voice. It’s almost unbelievable that he died 25 years ago, 15th April 1984.

But just how good a... More Reading...
Keith Pickles 60th Birthday Party

Saturday 25th March was the venue of “Wilsden’s got talent” or was it Keith’s 60th? Anyway there was quite a lot there, both magicians and Keith’s friends and family.

After the buffet, was the entertainment. No expense was spared to get a top line up. Or, knowing Keith, no money was ‘spared with’ to get entertainment. Stevie B was the compere and opened with a trick involving counting 6 cards in a repetitive manner, bet you can’t guess what it was!

Next on was me.
Hope you enjoyed the Party Night.

I thought it was a lot of fun and particular thanks must go to Keith for arranging most of the puzzles on the evening. I was responsible for the Charades game. It seemed to be well received. I used to enjoy watching ‘Give us a Clue’ on ITV many years back; my favourite celeb being Roy Kinnear. I introduced it to the Easter Parade Convention last year as the Late Show offering. The Convention Crasher - Justin Lee Collins

Not really liking Justin Lee Collins when I have seen him before as I felt he was poking fun at the object of his programme, I started to watch the programme with some trepidation. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with him and the show.

The basis of the show was that Justin Lee Collins wanted to perform in a magic competition in Ohio, America. He wanted to perform Metamorphosis (or as it is probably better known, The Sub Trunk Illusion). We were shown The Pendragons performing this at the lightning speed they did it. There was also old film of... More Reading...
St James The Great Church, Pudsey Show

I'm no great magician but being a theatre lover I do know what makes a good show. And the annual show in Pudsey didn't disappoint.

Compere for the day was the ever-reliable and always funny Stevie B. With an audience made up of children and adults, he had a bit of a balancing act on his hands, but he managed it with ease and put the crowd in the right frame of mind. With the children excited, the acts began. The first half was primarily for the youngsters. Joe King and Harlequin both performed to their usual high standard and got the day off to a great... More Reading...

Firstly, thank you to all those who supported the recent Roadshow at Pudsey. This means all the performers, assistants, reporter and those who joined the audience. It was a tremendously well received show and made the local paper, there be a copy of that in the Billet. This of course is the last Billet to be produced by Keith and sincerest thanks must go to Keith and Pam for such a tremendous personal commitment.

Tonight of course is the AGM at we’ll learn as to whether the magazine will be carried on or not.
I am writing this report on a sun-lounger on the deck of the Sea Princess somewhere in the Caribbean. Its 10 30am with blue skies and a temperature of 90 degrees. To keep cool I have just had a glass of ice and water followed by ice and orange. Saturday we will be in Jamaica and home on Sunday. I hope this article reaches Keith before the Billet deadline.

On board ship we had entertainment every night, four of which were occupied by magicians.
